This financial aid checklist is designed to ensure you have completed the necessary steps to secure financial aid as an incoming law student.

During the Application Process

  • Submit your completed Admissions Application by the appropriate deadline for merit-based scholarships:
    • December 31 for Chancellors Scholarships (full tuition and fees)
    • March 1 priority deadline for all other merit-based recurring scholarships
    • Scholarship awards will be on a continuing basis throughout the application period. The awards notification will be sent via letter and email and will include the amount of the award and the terms for renewal.

There is no separate financial aid or scholarship application required to be considered for these awards, although the Chancellors Scholarships do involve an interview process. Students will be notified directly if they are chosen to be interviewed for a Chancellors Scholarship, so there is no need to initiate contact with our office.
  • Submit the completed FAFSA or renewal FAFSA by the priority filing date of March 1. You'll need to establish or retrieve your PIN prior to beginning the application. Remember to include our Title IV school code on your application: 002974.
  • Review your Student Aid Report (SAR) for accuracy. Make changes online as necessary.
  • Officially accept any merit scholarship offer. To do so, please pay your seat deposit(s) and submit your completed scholarship agreement form by the deadline(s) indicated in your offer letter.
  • Report any financial assistance that you have been offered from external (non-UNC) sources to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid via the Outside Scholarships and Resources Reporting Form. Please report this information as soon as you receive notification of an external award to avoid late adjustments that may delay the processing of your aid or subsequent refund.
  • Regularly check the e-mail account that you reported on your admissions application, and provide any requested documentation or complete any required action as indicated by official university messages.
  • Regularly check your financial aid status in the ConnectCarolina Student Center once you have received your PID (Person ID Number) and created your ONYEN (Only Name You'll Ever Need) and password. This is where you will receive notice of missing information and accept or decline all or part of your financial aid award.

Once you are awarded aid

  • Officially accept or decline your financial aid award in the ConnectCarolina Student Center . You have the option of accepting all, none or part of any student loans offered. Change the loan amount to the total you would like to accept for the academic year.
  • Complete master promissory notes (MPNs) and entrance loan counseling for any Federal Direct Loans that you have been awarded. You are required to sign in with your Social Security number, date of birth, and Federal Student Aid PIN in order to access MPNs and counseling. We advise you complete the entrance loan counseling for the Graduate PLUS Loan, even if you haven't yet decided to borrow one. You will complete one MPN that covers both subsidized and unsubsidized loans.
  • Submit a Graduate PLUS Loan Request if you want to borrow a loan to fill the gap between your financial aid package and your Cost of Attendance (COA) budget. You are required to sign in with your Social Security number, date of birth, and Federal Student Aid PIN in order to access the Direct PLUS Loan Request. A new request must be submitted for each academic year during which you are requesting this loan. You will have to complete a separate MPN for the Graduate PLUS Loan, but it only needs to be completed once for your entire law school career.
  • Update and keep your electronic and mailing addresses current in the ConnectCarolina Student Center .
  • Report any financial assistance that you have been offered from external sources to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, via the Outside Scholarships and Resources Reporting Form. If the additional assistance impacts your financial aid eligibility, your aid package will be adjusted accordingly.
